• I want to build a site that has a private membership area using BuddyPress, but I also want to add a simple online store. But now I find everyone who registers to buy something ends up a member on Buddypress with access to the online community. For me this is extremely bad. the two should not meet. So it’s fine for a community member to make a purchase and it would perhaps be neat if they did not have to re-register (but not essential) – but I can’t have every customer being enrolled in the online community. Advice much appreciated.

This must be a common issue – someone? Please?

Not 100% sure it’s gonna make it but.. have you tried tweaking the registration options in WC?

    See: https://docs.woothemes.com/document/configuring-woocommerce-settings/#registration-options

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don’t see a setting that is going to help.
When a customer registers, they get assigned the role ‘customer’, which is great so we can, in theory, keep them separate. But BuddyPress doesn’t seem to see it that way and they get the buddypress member privileges. BuddyPress should only deal with members signed up through the buddypress registration process.

Anyway, there are various user role editor plug-ins that I shall try out, to see if I can restrict access to the Buddypress features for shop customers. If anyone’s already been through this process please shout.
