How to install and use WordPress without a web host?

  • Hi people, I have some experience with building and uploading simple HTML-based web sites and pages but I’ve never touched anything remotely close to WeordPress or PhP.
    Consider me a complete and absolute newbie.

    Now, I am interested in learning WordPress for building web sites (not blogs).
    I just want to mess around with WordPress and learn how to use it by the trial/error method.
    I don’t have a web host and I don’t want to pay for one before I am ready to upload a site to it.
    How can I test run WordPress without a web host and learn how to build sites with it offline?

    Should I install a web server on my machine or something? To be honest, I don’t want to do that – will make things even more confusing and complicated for me.

    Or is there a free web host that supports WordPress that i can use for my test host?

    I think WordPress offers free web space but I understand that it is only for blogs?

    Any tips and advices are welcome.

    Scroll right to the bottom and read the section on WAMP. You’ll have to install a web server.

    That’s wordpress.COM. The administration interface will be very similar, but you’re much more limited in what you can do with your site. For example, you can’t install plugins or themes. You can only choose from existing themes and customize them as much as their built in options allow.

    So, installing a web server on my machine is my only option to test WordPress?
    Aren’t there any free web hosting services that offer WordPress support?
    I remember back in the day there were free hosts that would allow you to use their web space and they would add banner ads in your pages as a compensation.
    Should I bother searching for a host like that?

    I have seen instances where you use a free host and they have there ads on your wordpress and if they do not get any return from you using their server space they delete your account and then you loose all the hard work you have done.

    So the best way is to work and learn locally if you do not want to invest for a domain name and host account until you are ready and learned how to use wordpress.

    I am running IIS now.
    I managed to install WordPress after filling in a ton of confusing information.
    I had to type in a password about 5 billion times.
    But it worked.
    Now I’ll try to figure it out how the thing works.

    Yes last time there were such free hosts, but they only provide basic web hosting. To use wordpress, you also need them to provide PHP and a MySQL database. These are usually premium features.

    There’s some mention of free webhosting with such features in these forums, but like govpatel said, it’s probably not worth it.

    Do note that after installing IIS, you still need PHP and MySQL.

    I guess the whole package automatically installed PHP and MySQL on my machine?
    I am running WordPress now but I don’t know if it has its PHP functionality.
    Maybe I will have to install PHP manually?
    Or does the fact that I managed to run WordPress on my machine mean that I already have PHP installed?

    WordPress is written using PHP, so if you are seeing a site, logging is admin and playing with the admin menu, then you have PHP, MySQL, and most like Apache installed.
