Make sure that you first create a child theme so that changes won’t be lost when you update your theme – make the custom template in the child theme:

If you are looking for just a normal page to be your homepage, often you don’t need to code it but will find it with the right options, did you try setting your homepage to a page under settings -> reading -> frontpage?

i want to have a different home page than the one that my wordpress theme provides me
