I have a static website which has a BLOG page – so far I have been blogging there just myself. Now I’d like to make it a proper blogging page accepting comments/posts on my articles by the visitors.

In Settings> reading, I selected Blog page (my current page) as Post page (previously there was non selected, only Home page as my front static page). and yes, I got a blogging page. However, all my current text (articles) disappeared. I can still see them in my Edit Page mode though, but not on the live site. Because of that, I have no way to add my blogs so that they be visible – the edit mode and the live page don’t match.

    what am I doing wrong?

    grateful for advice.

    thanks

    Anna

  • Why have you configured WP to use a static front page when you already have a static web site?

sorry – I have only configured the front page to be static, which made all my pages looking like a static website (ie no posts or comments). The site is WordPress what it is. ??

    have a look – quantummind.com.au

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

I will check the plugins. I use Online Marketer theme which I like and spent a lot of time customising it, and so will not switch to another theme.

if plugins don’t solve the problem and no other fixes are found, I will create my blog in a subdomain.

    thanks!

    Now I’ve got another problem.

I decided to create my blog in the subdomain after all, and so I reverted the settings in Settings > reading BACK TO THEY WERE BEFORE (ie Front Page – Home, Posts page – none), and saved the change. Sure enough, my Blog page returned to normal with my own articles on it.

Today, I got an email saying that there is one comment awaiting moderation. When clicked on the link, it took me to my website with the Blog page looking like a blog, with a test comment from WordPress – the blog page which I DID CANCEL YESTERDAY! When I clicked on the link to the comment (in the same email), I saw it in my dashboard under comments (it was spam which I deleted).

I rang my host who said there is nothing they can help me with as this is the content of my site, not a server issue.

    My questions are:
    – how and why did WordPress RETAIN the blog (post) AFTER I cancelled it?
    – how could someone have actually found it on the internet, and post a comment, if I cannot see it anywhere on my website???
    – how can I REMOVE it?

This is something weird which I’m not happy with – the system creating content on my website that I cannot see , nor have saved it.

    please advise!

    thanks
    Anna

Anna; you need to do as Esmi has advised. Temporarily switching to the default theme will assist troubleshooting, as it will allow us to determine if your issue is theme specific.

For what it’s worth; your blog posts are currently located at this url: https://www.quantummind.com.au/category/uncategorized/

Shane – I simply want to REMOVE it without re-organising my whole website – why would this be so difficult? I’ve never heard of such problems with wordpress.

How can I deactive / remove / delete this blog in the dashboard??

Go to posts and delete the only post there.

    (@annaanderson)

I have. The posts disappeared, but the blog (page) is still there (without posts). see for yourself.

No – your Blog page is simply a static page. There are no posts on it. Ditto with your site’s front page. Remember to press CTRL and F5 simultaneously when viewing an updated page/site. Or try emptying your browser cache. This should ensure that your web browser fetches a fresh copy of the page rather than serving up an out-dated copy from your own cache.

    Also disable/deactivate any caching plugin(s).

I have finally sorted it out.

Previously I deleted only Comments rather than Posts. I now deleted the Post, and the blog disappeared.

no need to deactivate my plugins or change my theme. (Btw emptying my cache did not help either)

My friendly Host has also explained to me that WordPress creates domain/category/uncategorised backend files for any blogs.

NOW I understand how this works.

    thanks

My friendly Host has also explained to me that WordPress creates domain/category/uncategorised backend files for any blogs.

Um…. that’s incorrect. all of your site’s content – including your Posts – is stored in your site’s database. Not in any files.

    Thread Starter AnnaA

    (@annaanderson)

ok, “files” was my description. The important part was that the system creates SOME space linked to/attached to/part of (whatever the correct words are) my website, which is used when I create a blog, and is not used when there are no blogs.
