How to have more than one blog on the same site?

    I’ve seen it out there where people may have more than one unrelated blog on the same site, which you access by clicking the menu links at the top. I’m under the impression that there are themes which have such functionality built in, so if anyone could suggest such themes that would be helpful.

    But other than that, I’m under the impression that the MU plugin (now built into WP 3.0) can do something like that, so after some fiddling around, I’ve ended up creating a second blogsite under my main one. (Since the main one was an existing one, there was some notification that additional ones were set up as add-on domains).

    At this moment, the second site appears to be totally independent of the first one, even though I access it through the Super Admin Dashboard.

    I think what I might need to do next is to duplicate the theme and then somehow have menu links from the first site to the second so they appear to be a part of the same site.

    Am I on the right track? If so, can anyone explain how to set up a menu link (so that it looks like a page link, as opposed to an independent hyperlink) to link to my second site?

    And if I’m on the wrong track, can anyone suggest a better method for having more than one blog post (which appears to be) on the same site? I’ve heard some themes can have separate menu links to different blog categories which is another approach. But I’m unaware of what theme can do that.

  • You are on the right track.

    Putting the link in the menu area depends on your theme. what theme(s) are you using?

    I’m trying to do a similar thing, but at the beginning and COMPLETELY clueless. I basically want to have my main blog show up on the front page, and have a second blog that’s on the same site, with a link in the menu bar. If it helps to know, it’s possible for me to make this second blog just one category of posts. What’s the easiest way to do set this up?

    if the second blog is just one category of posts…. why not just post to that category?

    the onyl reason you woudl really need a second full blog is for things like:
    – blocking off access to users between blogs
    – using s different domain
    – using a completely different theme with a different structure.

    Otherwise, I’m not sure if you’d be served well with a completely separate blog.

    as an addendum to the original question:

    – if your themes uses the new menu function, use that and make a link
    – if not, use the Page links to plugin and use that to make a link

    First, get comfortably adding custom meus to the nav bar.

    Start with finding a theme that has the Appearance->Menu

    Twenty Ten does this, newer themes from the repo may hit or miss this new addition.

    Second, migrating a single WP3 blog to multisite requires you to edit your wp-config.php
    define('WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true);

    Tools->Network is where the process begins to transform your site into a network of sites.

    Finally, you control what posts go into blog 2, but the link you add to the menu of the first blog should be a link to a category like
    https://mysite.mynetwork.tld/category/featured_category/

    Basically, it has to do with separating out themes (in this categories) and just wanting to keep some stuff separate.

    I’ll try menus and see if that might work.

    Thanks to Andrea and David for taking the time to reply.

    I want to find a theme that uses the functions Andrea has mentioned, rather than attempt to hack and adapt the current theme to get it to behave differently.

    I have set up the multisite according to instructions but I don’t need the blogs to be so independent of each other so I will explore what the Twenty Ten theme can do with additional menus and other suggestions.
