• I’ve created a small, neighborhood blog basically to make announcements, neighborhood watches, events, and so forth. At the outset I attempted to lay out an “advertising” policy (“course rules” section) because I did not want to have everyone who has some “home based opportunity” cluttering up the site and making others feel uncomfortable. I’ve now got folks in the neighborhood who sell Mary Kay and various other “opportunities” wanting advertising space.

My question is, how would you handle the situation? Deny everyone? Allow everyone? or how would you filter it?

Thanks in advance for the input.

  • My two cents for what they’re worth (hopefully at least two cents). Since it’s an extension of the golf course, what would be appropriate on the golf course. Do buddies playing a round of golf ever talk business? I’ve heard it happens.

Well at least with Mary Kay it looks like you spelled it out clearly in the course rules…”The goal is not to deter folks from sharing their wares, but Ia€?m sure wea€?ve all had past experiences with neighbors and even friends involved in various a€?opportunitiesa€? and this is not the proper forum for that activity.” That’s my 2 cents…

Thanks. That’s what I thought, but I keep getting this clamor from folks who want “free” advertising and I’m of the opinion that it must be everyone or no one.

    Thanks for your input, everyone.

Here’s a thought, if you do want to provide some of this – create a Page called Local Resources or something, then allow people to post their “ads” as comments, making sure to specify what all information it must include. Since it’s specific to the golf course, I would require that the business be within a certain distance. And then carefully moderate said comments to make sure they are appropriate.
