That’s a great question. I would use the plugin. But after you’ve made the changes, you can disable the role editing plugin. This is one of those rare instances where disabling the plugin won’t remove the changes it has made. You could use it to set up the permissions as you’d like then turn it off. The changes should stay.

I’d also recommend making a backup of the original settings before making these changes since they are a bit trickier to undo than just disabling a plugin.
