    Hello,

I’m building a purely functional site for 3 different groups of people. This website has a strong hierarchy:
    1. There is a public area that people with the right address can access.
    2. A link can be found that leads those with the password (set by me) to the next page with a series of articles and pages for a select group of people.
    3. On this second page another level can be accessed by an even smaller group of people with the password.

However, any article or page linking on the 2nd or 3rd level has free access if you have the direct link for it. How do I stop that from happening without people needing to log into every single page on said hierarchical level?

I’m working with people that are not really willing to move into the digital age, but it is necessary for the progress of this group ánd the people they stand for. So I want to make it as easy as possible for them (as they don’t really want to make accounts) but without exposing potential sensitive information.

What is the best way to approach this?

Use a plugin to create membership groups tied to what pages group members can access, then create user accounts for each user and assign them to appropriate membership groups.

On the surface, it may seem that using the single password would be easier for your users — but it won’t. Been there, done that (I’m a volunteer “tech guy” for a group of elderly folks in my community.)

What happens when you HAVE TO change this single password? Sure, you can email the new password — but some people are not going to receive or check their email, and some will simply forget to use the new password. Change the password again, and the confusion will only grow.

Creating a simple page with nothing more than two fields for them to enter their assigned username and password to see a list of pages they can access should be far easier for them, in the end, than the convoluted approach you’re contemplating.

This will also be more secure (if the security/privacy/confidentiality of these documents is important to you) and, as an icing on the cake, much simpler for you to administer.

Just my 2 cents though ??
