How to get Separate Categories for Listings and Articles

    I am currently building a Dog Rescue Centre site where I have used Categories to display a list of Counties and Tags to list Dog Breeds to enable Filtering of posts listing of dogs available for rehoming through the site.
    I would like to display a feature slider on the home page linking to dog related articles but I don’t want this separate category of posts to show up on the listings.

    A) Am I doing it the best way (Not keen on the style of available Pet listing Plugins)
    B) How do I create these two types of posts one being listings and the second being articles
