How to exclude categories from being displayed

  • Hello,
    I want to control the list of categories that are displayed on the sidebar. I do not want all the categories to listed in the sidebar by default. After googling(a lot) I learned that the function wp_list_cats(“exclude=2,5,1,6”) can take of this problem for me. But how do I find the category id? They are not listed in the in manage>category.
