How to enable registration emails from localhost?

Dear all,

I’m running WP locally via Xampp. In order to test a registration form, confirmation emails need to be sent out. I spend many hours on making this work but to no avail so far. I found some great resources here, here, here and here but this information is often outdated and/or conflicting.

Does anybody know how to make this work?
