How to embed code into a blog post tutorial

Hi all, I’m wondering how to embed code into a blog post tutorial, is that possible without a plugin? If not, which plugin do you recommend? Been doing some googling still can’t figure it out. Tried wrapping it in code tags but it didn’t work, it still executed the code not displayed it. TIA.
