You can change the code, but the changes will be away after an upgrade. So the answer is: no way. Sorry.

Hmm could you let me have the code to change? I may be able to put it in the functions.php so that it survives upgrades

No, there are no hooks in the output template (file widget.php of the plugin). And I do not know where to put such hooks because there are different desires where to display what at each list item.

Oh well that’s disappointing. Jetpack’s default Related Posts has the category nicely below the title and wanted the recent posts to be consistent with it.

Too bad. Feature request then? XD

With the new version 4.6 you can show the assigned categories per post. You can style that information via CSS with the selector .rpwwt-post-categories.

If you like that new option I would be glad about your review.

Wow thanks! I had to use Javascript to customize some of the text display (i.e. add quotation marks around the category), but that’s unavoidable as it would be too unwieldy to add that level of customization to a widget.

Added a review for you, keep up the good work ??

Yes, borders of custominzation are wide, very wide. It is not enough to think about the many possibilities to display an information. WordPress is used worldwide. You have to think about cultural differences and preferences in other languages and regions. It is not possible to know and to match them all. So your way is fine.

    Thank you for your review.
