How to display posts by category?

Hello,

I’m trying to re-arrange the way posts get displayed by category.

So on the left hand side, the latest article excerpt from one category gets displayed (say ‘pictures’).

On the right hand side, I’d like it to display posts from all categories except from ‘pictures’.

How do I do that? Any pointers?
