To my dismay I just noticed that people that buy articles in our Woocommerce web-shop are automatically added to a list “Woocommerce customers” in MailPoet. How can I disable this? Unlike with other lists I see no disable of remove option. In our case this is highly undesirable and even illegal.

We do not use MailPoet for sending notification e-mails from WordPress or other plugins. In MailPoets settings, there is a Woocommerce tab but I left everything unchecked.

In Woocommerce settings I cannot find anything that could be related to this.

Background: we are an association. We don’t have customers, but we do run a small Woocommerce web-shop for club articles and specialized books. It is also open to non-members.
We are using MailPoet for a newsletter to members and relations. These two activities are totally unrelated. We do NOT (want to) send newsletters to webshop users.
Under the privacy legislation in this country (The Netherlands) we are not allowed to use any personal information provided in a Woocommerce order for anything else than fulfilling the order.

I just took a closer look to compare recent Woocommerce orders with the contents of the ‘Woocommerce customers’ list. Not every Woocommerce address gets added to the ‘Woocommerce customers’ list. Only a part of them appears on the list as “unconfirmed”. Some others appear when I filter all subscribers on ‘Woocommerce customers’ but without anything listed in the LISTS column. And again others do not appear in MailPoet at all.

Something is not working consistently here.

Note: I left ‘Opt-in on checkout’ unchecked on the Woocommerce tab in MailPoet and the option does not appear on the Woocommerce checkout.

Oh, and Merry Christmas / Vrolijk Kerstfeest op Texel ??

    Hi @willemb2,

There’s no way to disable this list, as it’s created by the plugin by default.

If you don’t want to send emails to this list, that’s okay. Simply do not use it.

If all the settings in the MailPoet > Settings > WooCommerce tab are disabled, the customers should be automatically added to this list as “Unsubscribed”, which means they won’t receive any emails sent from MailPoet.

    Hello @bruberries,

So as I understand it, the plugin does not only do this by default, there is even no opt-out. And IMHO that is a bad choice.

Even though addresses are added as “Unsubscribed”, this list is for the GDPR an administration of personally identifiable information that does not comply with the purpose for which the information was provided: fulfilling the order. We’re simply not allowed to do this. And apart from the legal side: the list is there and if an inexperienced editor is only a few mouse-clicks away from accidentally sending a newsletter to webshop users and we will have quite a riot. Data harvesting is a very sensitive subject these days. Before you know some people will be calling it a data-leak on Twitter.

Now that MailPoet is part of Woocommerce.com I understand that your management wants to provide added value by offering integration between the products. But why not give your customers the choice whether they want to use that?

We’re approaching the 1000 address limit and were just considering buying a license. But we cannot use MailPoet if you’re not allowing us to switch off this “feature”.

I know that this pushy marketing style is more common and accepted in the US, but in Europe you will bite your own tail with it.

    Hi again @willemb2 ????

Thanks for sharing your candid feedback.

Just to try to clarify this further, if you accidentally send an email to the WooCommerce Customer list it wouldn’t be delivered to any user since they are added as unsubscribed when the “Opt-in on checkout” setting is disabled.

Having said this, I understand your concerns and it might be better if those users were not added to any list when that checkbox is not selected.

So, at this point, I would really like to ask you to share this here: https://feedback.mailpoet.com

That will allow other users to vote and comment on that issue. Our team regularly checks that and takes it into account when discussing new features and improvements for the plugin ??

    I hope this helps.
