How to determine current archive year outside the loop?

  • This one has got me baffled.

    I’ve been using a cobbled-together plugin which is called from sidebar.php. The code in question used get_the_time(‘Y’) to get the year of the current post. And I was using it to wrap the current year with

    I realise that tag should be used in the loop, but up until a day or so ago it was working FINE. Now it seems to have just packed it in… Grrr.

    Second request is of course… Anyone know how I can determine current archive year in sidebar.php so I CAN add styles to the currently selected year link?
