How to create short tags for a plugin

I’m a new php developer (really, really new – converting from coldfusion). I’m trying to write a wordpress plugin, and I’m lost on how to create the short tags I want (example: [myplugin] ) to use to insert my plugin’s front end on any page/post. I’d really appreciate any tips or any articles you can point me to.
