How to choose from hundreds of categories?

I’m at the point where it takes me a huge amount of time selecting categories, because there are so many of them that I’ve made over the years. Don’t blame me. That’s how WordPress started out over a decade ago, with categories – not tags. So anyway, is there a way to make that little category selection window bigger, or a search field add-on for it, etc? Anything? I’m going bonkers now, trying to sift through all of the categories.
