How to change permissions

I haven’t been able to upgrade my wordpress since my current version (4.4.2) due to permissions. I need help changing the permissions. I don’t want to have to do a manual upgrade every time. I have went to certain folders to change the permissions but others I can’t and the ones I have changed did nothing for me. Please assist. Which ones do I need to change to make it work again.
