  • You shouldn’t open links in new windows. It’s bad form. If a user wants to open a link in a new window, they can right-click on their mouse and open it. Let the user decide how to use their own browser.

it’s possible to set that default for a page – but then it will do that for all your links, including category archives and tags, etc.

I agree with greenshady… it’s bad form, and you shouldn’t do it, but if you really want to then hard-code it in your posts.

I do believe there are some scripts (JavaScript) that you can use that does this type of thing too. I just don’t have any links on hand for that type of stuff.

yeah, it’s possible to modify all the links which reside in certain divs only… via javascript DOM.

I don’t particularly like what its going to do to his visitor’s viewing experience, so I’m not really motivated to actually dig up some code though, sorry.

maybe that user thinks of a very precise place in his blog, who knows ? And if that’s not for a very precise place, if he wants to screw up his blog, he’d manage to do it anyway ??

Anyway, the simplest solution would be base target=”_blank”, otherwise, a javascript for that (just googling “javascript target blank” should do the trick, I guess)…

I was looking for a way to change the default setting when adding a link when writing an article and to be honest, the answers here annoyed me enough to reset my password and login to post.

First, the poster didn’t ask for your advice on etiquette, he asked for a solution to his request.

Second, I completely disagree with the suggestions. If I’m reading an article and I want to check out a referenced link, I don’t want to have to use the back button to get back to the article I was reading. In fact, it annoys me when authors make me right click and open a new window. Not only that – if I have a visitor at my page and it’s their first visit – how do I know I’m not losing them forever by sending them off into the internet in the same window? I’d rather give good information, open links in a new window, and give them the opportunity to bookmark my site after reading my article.

    Now to answer the question.

    kthxbye.

Not only that – if I have a visitor at my page and it’s their first visit – how do I know I’m not losing them forever by sending them off into the internet in the same window?

If they don’t come back, it’s because your site/blog either doesn’t contain the information that they’re looking for or they are unable to locate it. Forcing users to open new windows will not increase site traffic but it can (and does) annoy the hell out of some people and create impossible barriers for others.
