I’ve found a few threads on this topic but everything I’ve tried doesn’t seem to work. I have a blog post that was originally created with the default category “uncategorized” and I want to change it to a newly created category called “events and news” but when I make the change the post no longer shows up on the blog page or the recent posts. Then when I change it back to “uncategorized” it is there.

I’ve deleted everything from the trash folder and changed the permalink in the post itself but it doesn’t seem to help. I also looked in the database and still see three instances of the post with two of them inherited and one published. It doesn’t have a table for category so I couldn’t change it there. I’ve tried changing the category check box in the post itself to events and news but that didn’t work. I have since changed the default category to Events and News. Any advice or direction is appreciated.

    Hello Nootkan,

As you understood, “uncategorized” is the default category automaticvally created by WP, if no category is created or found. In database, it is associated with number “1”. Whatever WP setup.

Can you tell me if you just updated to WP 4.4 please?

    A few ideas:

    – One table can contain one full wp site (so not the issue)
    – 3 instances of same post is really bad
    – i think maybe try to rename category with a slug wordpress understand better aka “events-and-category” and reassign posts to this new category (php nor myslq and so wordpress don’t like names with empty spaces like “events and..”.

Hope it helps to solve issue,

Thanks for your reply. I have deleted all the categories I created and also the posts associated with them. I then renamed the uncategorized to Events And News and left it as the default. I then re-posted without checking the box and that worked. I then proceeded to create new categories using the options in the right sidebar on the “add new post” page. Then I created a new post and choose one of the new categories. It didn’t work.

I deleted all the categories except for the default and then went into the left sidebar to Posts>>Categories>>Add New Category. I created the new categories and associated the posts with them and everything worked. So it seems this is an issue with only the create category option on the “add new post” page.

I have disabled all the plugins and went through the whole process again with no difference. The only thing I haven’t done yet is to change themes to see if that is the culprit. This is because it is a live site and I’m waiting for a good time to do this without affecting the site. Does this sound like I may be on the right track? Or is this an issue with version 4.4?

    @nootkan

Ok, glad my answer helped you for the most part, and solved SOME issues (not all).

Yeah all seems on the right track, but you might have bugs between theme and data on fully switching to 4.4. Or the theme you use now is not very “4.4 new WP version friendly” it’s possible).

While checking that, you can make tests not on localhost (2 different hosts, 2 different test settings under LAMP or Nginx or whatever webserver).

What I miss to answer you more helpfully is what is the issue now?

    Good luck,

The only issue I have now is I can’t use the categories created in the right sidebar when creating a new post. The only way the posts will submit to the blog is if I create a category from the left sidebar menu. ie: Posts>>Category>>Add New Category. I can live with that for now until I can find out what is causing the conflict.

    @nootkan

Alright, if you can, please send me the url of site at this email:
    [email protected]

I’ll give that a look when i have the time (in next week, probably tuesday or wednesday), and repost feedback here.

Or, we discuss in private by email, as you wish the goal is to find solution.

Final edit, if your normal post or page doesn’t appear in your site, then there is a big issue. Maybe it was a design request, but at least some page or post should appear on your home page (I know your question is about widget but even, something should appear in a general WP way).

    Regards,

    As for your problem –
    (1) you should never rename or attempt to delete the ‘uncatogorized’ category. Each post is attached to a category and the default category is ‘uncategorized’. It is quite possible that your theme only displays the posts from the ‘uncatogrized’ category on your blog page.

    (2) if you followed the suggestions in the Forum Welcome message, you would have provided the URL to your site and the name of the theme you are using. Knowing the theme would help determining any issue. Please provide these in a response

    (3) you should be very careful changing things in the database and NEVER do that without first having made a backup of the database (you DO know how to backup and restore your database…right???)

    (4) you should create a play site – a copy of your live site where you can test things like upgrades, new plugins, etc before doing it to your live site. You could make it a subdomain, so if your main site was my domain.com, the palest could be myplaysite.mydomain.com. When you create it, point it to a different folder and make sure it’s not in the existing wp’s root folder.

@digico Paris – please be careful with your statements i.e.

    – One table can contain one full wp site (so not the issue)

A wordpress site contains at minimum 11 TABLES. Normally one there is one DATABASE for each wordpress site

    – 3 instances of same post is really bad

If you look in the WP database at the wp-post table, you can find many occurances with the same post ID. THEY ARE REVISIONS. This is perfectly normal and is how you can revert to a previously edited version of your post.

    – i think maybe try to rename category with a slug wordpress understand better aka “events-and-category” and reassign posts to this new category (php nor myslq and so wordpress don’t like names with empty spaces like “events and..”.

Having a category name with a space in it is perfectly fine! And you can not create a slug with a space in it. WordPress will change the space to a dash (-) to create the slug. If you try to put a space in the slug, WP will change it to a dash.

@nootkan – have you made any changes to the content of your site since your last backup? One thought (in the back…way back) in my mind is there might be a database corruption issue. So with that as a slim possibility, I would urge you not to add any more posts, media, pages etc, until you get this resolved.

One other thing – please change your permalink (dashboard->settings->permalink) to the default and then back to what you currently have and see if that helps.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I resolved this issue by deleting everything and starting over. After importing my database backup everything seemed to work again. Not sure what the issue was but it is now resolved. Thanks to everyone for trying to help, appreciate it.
