How to build a pre-launch blog with Launchpad theme first, custom design later?

    I’d be grateful for a little advice for a beginner…

    I’ve been advised the best way to build a content full, pre-launch blog is to download WordPress locally.

    If I use the Launchpad theme and add plug-ins to the pre-launch blog, does any subsequent theme I use recognise the content + plug-ins- in effect, just “slip over” what is already there?

    I plan to eventually get a custom theme designed and the designer will include plug-ins.

    I’m not sure whether the custom theme will “slip over” my pre-launch blog or whether I should just wait to get the unique theme, install it locally then build the pre-launch blog.

    Any advice is much appreciated.
