How to avoid 504 Gateway Time-outs

Hey guys, sometimes when I try to login to my wordpress dashboard, or even view my website as a reader, the page will say “504 Gateway timeout.” I googled it, and most of what came up said that I probably have to increase my PHP script execution time with NGINX, but I’m not sure exactly what all that means or how to do that.. hope someone can help me out (:
