I’m not entirely sure I understand what you are wanting. On the Cubic demo site, near the bottom under Quick Specs, it states featured images should be 2000 x 1500 pixels. As long as they are real close to those dimensions they should work fine.

If I’ve misunderstood, please let me know, and also a link to the site would be very helpful.

At the homepage you have thumbnails on all posts, what is the best way to fit images to these thumbnails?

According to the Cubic Theme Showcase page, under Quick Specs near the bottom, the featured images should be 2000 x 1500 pixels. That insures they will look good on the single post pages. The software will create the thumbnails off of those images for the blog, category, tag and date archive pages, and will center weight those crops, so keep that in mind when you choose or prepare your featured images and keep the good bits near the center of the images.
