How to add pluggins to main area instead of side bar ?

    Guys: Please correct me if I’m wrong but it appears to me that most if not all the pluggins are designed to work with the side bar. Suppose I want to pluggin a widget to my WordPress blog, say a chat widget, is there a way to add and display it in the main (big) area of the site instead of the side bar ? Things that require a large view like a chat program, I want to display it directly on the page and not on the side bar. Any idea on how to do this ? Thanks!
