I feel like a dummy to ask this question, but…

I installed WordPress for a friend so she could have her own blog on her site chuckleatchaos.com.

I’ve noticed that the free blogs on WordPress.com have an option to add “follow via email” to the sidebar. I like that option because then I can just enter my email address and I can select to have posts emailed to me daily/weekly/monthly/etc. I want to add that option on the right sidebar for people to follow the chuckleatchaos blog via email, but I can’t seem to find the widget. All I can find is lots and LOTS of different social media plugins.

Am I just missing something painfully obvious?

  • You first need to set up a Feedburner account, then set up their blog-to-email feed, and use their code to add a signup option to your site.

    https://feedburner.google.com/

Doing that also creates a Feedburner RSS feed, which you can use instead of WordPress’s built-in feed. To do that easily, install Feedburner Extend to redirect the default WordPress feed to Feedburner’s.

Does the current version of WordPress have an option that is already installed and I’m just missing it? I’m reading more about FeedBurner and in one place it says “[i]f you are using a popular blogging platform or publishing tool like TypePad, WordPress, or Blogger, you likely publish a feed automatically.”

It has RSS built in, but not RSS-to-email.

Right, WordPress does publish an RSS feed out of the box, but the RSS-to-email option is not built in as far as I know.

p.s. Feedburner’s RSS feed is far superior to WordPress’s so I always use it for my clients. Lots of things that can easily be customized on the feed.

I think I know what RebeccainMI is talking about. Sure that gives users a way to subscribe to the RSS feed, but there is no way to add the “Follow My Blog via Email” widget to her blog. I am running into the same problem. How come some blogs have that widget available and some don’t?

Hi there – To add a “follow my blog via email” form to your blog once you’ve set up your Feedburner blog-to-email service, you just add a text widget to a widgetized area of your site, and paste in the signup code provided by Feedburner.

Unless I’m misunderstanding what you mean – in which case, could you please provide a link to a blog with the type of email signup you mean? Thx.

This blog belongs to a friend of mine in Chicago. If you scroll down a little bit you will see on the right-hand side (above “Archives” and “Meta”) she has a box that says “Subscribe to Little Wonders” and there’s a box where you just type in your email address and you will receive a message anytime she posts a new blog.

Right, but that’s a WordPress.com-hosted blog, not a self-hosted blog, just as the original poster pointed out. As I mentioned earlier, I don’t think that option exists for www.remarpro.com sites, outside of using third-party services like Feedburner, but someone can correct me if I’m mistaken.

Let me know if that’s clearer!

Hmm – it just occurred to me that the Jetpack plug-in might have email subscriptions as an option – and it looks like they may, if I’m reading this correctly: “Email subscriptions for your blog’s posts and your post’s comments.” I’m not sure if that means it’s just a notification checkbox on each individual post, or a real blog-to-email signup – you might want to try it out and report back!

    OK, I will try it!

Just FYI, once the plugin is activated you end up here:

Jetpack supercharges your self-hosted WordPress site with the awesome cloud power of WordPress.com. To enable all of the Jetpack features you’ll need to connect your website to WordPress.com using the button to the right. Once you’ve made the connection you’ll activate all the delightful features below.

Clicking the button takes you to a page where you enter your WordPress.com username and password. Once your accounts are connected you’re good to go, it would seem.

Right. You do need a WP.com username & pw to use Jetpack as it’s an Automattic product.

Let me know if it gives you the blog-to-email widget you’re looking for!

It does! And it’s much more simple than trying to figure out FeedBurner.

Awesome! Thanks for reporting back and so glad this worked out. Sorry I didn’t think of it earlier. ??

Jetpack and Follow plugins are compatible up to 3.3.2. Are there plugins compatible for 3.4.1? Thanks.
