How to add Author to Search Function

Which explains how to modify the existing WordPress search. However, when I put it into my functions.php file, it does not work. I think it’s getting processed, it’s just not returning results.
I am using a heavily modified twentyfourteen theme.
The “original” search still works and returns results – even after the addition of the new code, so that’s good.
I currently don’t have a “no results” page, but I’m working on setting that up as well.
Please advise. Thanks!
