• Hi,

I have created a multi user site that uses sub directories and installed the domain mapper. I set the blog at mysite.com/blog1 to map to blog1.mysite.com. Now do I create an A record using the DNS Zone Editor? What do I need to tell it to map blog1.mysite.com to mysite.com/blog1 since it only seems to accept an IP address?

  • Create an A record and put in the IP address of where your main site is hosted.

OK I added it and waited a few days for it to take effect, but is still does not work. Any suggestions?

I have reviewed those steps. When I set the sub-domain as the primary domain, that particular blog is not longer accessible. I have to go into the domain mapping table of the database and delete the rows related to the blog to make it accessible again. But an A record does exist that points to the ip of the domain.

    no longer accessible how?

did you point or park that subdomain on the server side to the main install?

Otto said that, “Note that if you didn’t get the domain pointed at your server before doing this, then your site will instantly vanish from the realm of mortal man.” That is what I am experiencing because whether I create an A record or cname, it does not seem to be enough to map to the mydomain.com/blog1/ to blog1.mydomain.com. Somewhere I read that both an A record and a cname were needed for this to work. I will need to find that article again.

No, you need something on the server side that says “hey yes, we’ll catch that domain and direct it right over here to this here wordpress install”.

    in cpanel it’s called Parking.

    what host are you on?

    HostMonster

do they have cpanel? do you see a spot called “park a domain”?

Yes, they have those things. So far I have been trying to use my primary domain. but I do have a parked domain that I could use. Let me work with that one and I will report back in a few days.

I tried it again. I have a parked domain, an A record such as blog.parked-domain.com pointing to the IP of the multiuser. I set the mapping of the blog to blog.parked-domain.com. When I go to the old location of the blog, it correctly redirects me to blog.parked-domain.com. But I get a 404, there is nothing there to display.

Before you map the sub site to a new domain, does IT work?

And can you give me real URLs?

    Hello,

I have a domain from Intuit and hosting from Inmotion, but I built a site via wordpress.com. I wanted to change the nameservers so that my wordpress site would map to my domain name.

I was told that I need a wordpress IP address, A-record, and C-name. How would I acquire that?

    Thank you!
