• I have set up a website. Now I want to convert a page I mistakenly set up as a static page into a blog page. I have tried to change it to a blog page in the “Reading” set up page, but when I select my “blog ” page it goes to a “404 error, gnarly dude” page.

How do I set up a blog page on my WP website?

What is this “404 error” page?

    Thanks

  • The Reading setting only controls which page on the site is the “default” blog page, meaning that it shows all recent posts regardless of category, author, etc.

You may have to take the static content off of the page that you want to make your blog page.

I’m not sure if you are saying that changing the setting in admin causes the 404 error, or if you are saying that trying to navigate to the page after the setting is changed is causing the error.

What if you delete the page completely and then create a new page to assign as your default blog page?

Dear SS – I was able to find the answer on Thesis support forum. Now I have a blog page (I think). But when I click on “view page” or “preview post” it goes to the 404 error page. If I go to “visit site” I can see the blog page.

Try switching to the Default theme and see if it still happens. Then at least you could rule out any theme-related issues. I manage close to 20 WordPress sites and there was one that had problems with some of the buttons in admin not working. I was surprised to find out that the problems were being caused by the theme. I didn’t think the theme had any affect on the admin, but it does.

Are you using the most recent versions of WordPress and Thesis?

Another thing to try is deactivating all plugins. If the problem goes away then it’s being caused by a plugin conflict. Try turning them back on one at a time and see if one of them makes the problem come back. If you still have this problem with the default theme and no active plugins, then something is wrong with your WordPress installation.
