How payments to authors works ?

I’m sorry for asking this, but how does payments to author(s) work exactly ? Can you describe the scenario or steps please ?
Meanning is it done via paypal ? After payment to author(s), is the balance adjusted (automaticly or manualy) to what ever amount still due ?Thank you
