I have a large blog (about 4,000 posts and pages) and I am tight on disk space. When I tried some other caching solutions, a crawl by a search engine created cached copies of all of those pages, amounting to about 2 GB of cached files. The site crashed and burned when it ran out of space.

Falcon appears to clear the entire cache for many reasons. What I want to know is under normal operation, about how long a page should stay cached. My blog has lots of pages rarely accessed except by crawlers (at any given time there are usually 4 crawlers on the site), and a few very active pages that are heavily commented. Is Falcon going to cache a few pages, or a lot?

  • Hi,

Here is the Falcon documentation. It explains manually clearing the cache and events that trigger the cache clearing.

I’d say if your content isn’t updated very often then the cache won’t need to update very often. You can exclude pages from cacheing as well.

I had read the documentation, but I don’t know, not being a WordPress developer, when some of those things happen. I also noted the comment that said: “If a comment is posted the whole page cache is cleared.” I take “whole page cache” to mean the entire cache. My blog gets around 5 comments per hour. Does this mean on average the whole cache gets cleared every 12 minutes?

The cache is updated for individual pages when changes are made and not every page. What it is saying is that a comment will force that single page to recache to reflect the change made by the comment.

    Hope that helps,

I fetched the Cache Stats and it showed that there were 46 pages in the cache with the oldest 29 minutes. I added a comment and re-fetched the Cache Stats and it said that there were 2 pages in the cache with the oldest page at 8 seconds.

So it appears that adding a comment clears everything in the cache.

I personally like this behavior because it keeps the cache small.

Thanks for the update. Let me get clarification on “Whole Page Cache.” We may need to change it to “Entire Cache” to make it easier to understand.

I’m going to mark this as resolved.

    Thanks!
    Brian
