One of the first things I notice is that your site is pretty slow. The main page loads pretty quickly, but the about page and contact page for example take a little while (I got tired of waiting to test other pages).
You can use Yslow from Yahoo (Also available as a Firefox plugin) for example to see if you can make any improvements.
The site looks beautiful by the way, so that’s not the problem, probably just needs a bit of optimisation.
As for the sql queries. Maybe somebody else can give you a better answer: Check out wp super-cache plugin. I am not sure if it can handle the visitors you are expecting. However it has a lock-down function which changes all the files to solid html. This is used for the digg effect.
You can do a search in a search engine for: surviving the digg effect or WordPress surviving the digg effect.
