How many lines when hunting php code errors?

    I’ve noticed that when errors are thrown in wordpress the offending line is often quite a few lines below where the error code indicates. For instance the code may say line 92, and the actual error may appear in line 154.

    Can anyone help me clarify? It makes it a little wonky hunting bugs down, eh? Am I just imagining things, or is whitespace handled differently? Perhaps commented lines don’t count towards the total?
