There isn’t necessarily a limit, but they will begin to float to the next line as the menu gets bigger and bigger. Submenu works great for this.

I managed to change the width of the menu items

Try adding this to your custom css box in theme options > advanced settings:
#nav-second ul.sf-menu>li {
width: 13.5%;
}
