So I understand that legacy views are being deprecated, but how long do I have until I have to update? I’ve made some pretty significant customizations to my templates that I just don’t have time to change in the near future.

I understand that the legacy views won’t be supported which is just fine by me, but how long can I continue to use them anyway? Will legacy views be completely broken by the time 6.0 comes out? Will I be able to just stop updating the plugin and go about my business?

As of August 3rd, we are “retiring” the legacy views. https://theeventscalendar.com/blog/news/the-events-calendar-is-retiring-legacy-views/

    What this means:
    * we will stop running rigorous QA processes on the legacy views before releases – meaning they could break at anytime
    * when opening a support ticket, if running legacy views, we’ll encourage folks to make the switch. We may on occasion still help with legacy views, but that will only be in extreme situations (ex: fatal error introduced by the first bullet…)
    * In early-2022, we will be removing the code for legacy views from the product altogether.

If you don’t have time right now to make the switch, you might want to pause your auto-updates and stick with the current version of The Events Calendar (and relevant add-ons) giving you time to make plans to move away. While this plan will keep everything running smoothly, longer term you will want to keep things updated.

Great, thank you. I’ll try to dig into the new views in the coming months.

Have there been any new template tags added, or any other big under-the-hood changes that affect how templating works? The v2 views seem a little foreign to me, but maybe I just need to look more closely.

A lot has changed there. It’s different in a lot of ways, but the objective was to make a new platform that more easily supports customizations. We also believe the new structure will make it so customizations are less likely to have issues in future updates.
