• Can anyone see how the comment spam on the following post (the spammer is only targeting this post it seems) is getting through?

    https://www.simonemery.co.uk/72/vbulletin-volunteers/

I use a combination of Askimet, and a modified version of the TanTan spam filter plugin. The weird thing is that if I copy and paste any of the spam comments (japanese?) into the form, and submit, TanTan will always catch them, due to the number of links within the comments.

I’ve also removed the “2nd chance” feature of the TanTan plugin, to try and further secure it.

Askimet never catches any of these comments either…

I’m struggling to think how the spam is getting past the filters I’m using, given that the ‘preprocess’ comment filter used by TanTan *should* stop such comments dead.

Any ideas? I may be missing something obvious. ??

  • dumb question since I cant read chinese(??)

are those all spam or just the top most one?

the top most one isnt a comment.. its a pingback or a trackback.

Oh yeh, sorry, the top one isn’t spam – just a pingback / trackback.

The rest are spam (most have been deleted, but I kept today’s up for the purposes of this thread).

If it isn’t english, it’s spam.

ill test something … (when I find my handy little script)

    Thanks in advance. ??

i tried to comment remotely, bypassing a few thing — it didnt work (which is good). the one comment from me that you see was made right from the posts permalink.

    Thanks for trying it out.

I have to admit, I thought I had it relatively well protected, which is why these particular spam comments are frustrating!

The only possible causes I can think of are:

    – the language being used affecting posting (seems unlikely)
    – the fact I allow users to register (no suspect users on record though)
    – some other oversight in the WP code / a plugin (needle in a haystack)
