OK, so I am trying to figure out how this works. When I go to [mydomain].com/admin, I get to a WordPress page (www.remarpro.com) that lets me edit my site.

Meanwhile, my webhost says that my DNS provider is WordPress.COM. I thought that’s what enabled me to edit my site using WordPress, but now I understand that WordPress (org) is different from WordPress.com.

So how am I linked to WordPress (org)? What connects my site so that I can use www.remarpro.com to edit it?

And is there a reason I am using WordPress.COM as a DNS provider? I don’t even know what service they’re providing.

  • All sites that are not hosted on WordPress.com are using the code that is available for download here on www.remarpro.com. WordPress is a free and open source product. If you are using WordPress.com as your DNS provider you probably bought your domain from WordPress.com and then moved to a different hosting provider.

If your site is not hosted on WordPress.com and you are hosted somewhere else then you can likely removed the links to www.remarpro.com. There are plugins that will do it for you like this one.

There is also this article which shows you a couple ways to hide it the link from the footer.

Wait, so WordPress.com and www.remarpro.com are connected? I thought they are separate. Now I am confused again.

I still want to edit my site using WordPress (org) because I like the interface. But does WordPress.com do anything for me?

My domain is registered with another company (Network Solutions) and the webhost is yet another company (ASO). So I don’t understand the role of WordPress.com, or why it is my DNS provider.

WordPress.com is a hosting company for WordPress only websites.

www.remarpro.com allows you to use WordPress on any server you have access to.

You said WordPress.com was your DNS provider. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t know for sure who your DNS provider is and no one here in this volunteer support area would be able to correctly advise you about if need your account with WordPress.com since you mentioned they were your
DNS provider. I would advise contacting WordPress.com Support they might be able to help you figure this out better than us.

Nothing whatsoever, www.remarpro.com is this site that you are commenting on now. It is not connected to your site, or to any other user’s site. You absolutely *cannot* edit your site from here.

WordPress is not a company. It’s an open source organization and www.remarpro.com is this website that you are reading right now. It’s where we provide the software and have forums, but it doesn’t connect to your site at all.

You are highly confused about what exactly is going on here, and about how software really works.

As for WordPress.com, that is run by a company named “Automattic” and the only reason I can think tat you would be using their systems would be that you bought the domain or something else from them. Here’s the bottom line: Who are you paying money to? If you don’t know what you’re doing, then follow the money and figure it out from there.

Meanwhile, my webhost says that my DNS provider is WordPress.COM. I thought that’s what enabled me to edit my site using WordPress, but now I understand that WordPress (org) is different from WordPress.com.

If the domain in question is the one in your profile, then, yes, your host is right: the domain is using WordPress.com’s name servers.

But it seems a DNS A-record has been pointed to ASmallOrange, and that’s where the site is served from. Is ASmallOrange your host you mentioned?

And is there a reason I am using WordPress.COM as a DNS provider?

Unfortunately, none of us here can answer that question, as we don’t know the history of your website.

Perhaps you hosted the site at WordPress.com at some point?

But note that the domain isn’t actually with WordPress.com, so you don’t need to login to a WordPress.com account to change the name servers. The registrar is Network Solutions (but I can’t if say you purchased it directly from Network Solutions, or from a reseller).

So if you need to use your host’s name servers, just log in to your domain account and make the necessary changes from there: again, no WordPress.com login is needed.

Thanks everyone! I was indeed “highly confused.” I had gotten as far as to figure out there are two different things called WordPress (dot-com and dot-org) but I had not understood there are actually three: the dot-com, the dot-org, and the software itself. Of course I have three different logins for the three different things.

I just wanted to confirm that I don’t need either site (dot-com or dot-org) in order to keep updating my site with the software, and it is clear now that I don’t. Thanks for the clarification.

If your site was once previously on wordpress.com, or if you bought your domain from them, then they are basically acting as your registrar.

    Quick primer on websites:

    • You get your domain name (example.com or whatever) from a “Domain Registrar”. You pay them generally a yearly fee to have the domain name.
    • There also exists such a thing as a “DNS Provider”. This is usually the same company as your registrar or hosting account, but nothing says it has to be. It can be separate.
    • You have a web hosting account somewhere (ASO in your case). This company provides essentially a computer connected to the internet, which is on 24/7. This is commonly called a server. Your website lives here on this server’s hard drive and it responds to people wanting to look at the website.
    • The server runs a set of software to display the website. This software includes many pieces. The WordPress piece is called a CMS, or Content Management System. It’s just a complicated series of scripts that lets you build your website and make posts and post pictures and so on.

Hope that helps anybody untangle some of the confusion. We throw a lot of terms like that around, but simplifying it down and knowing these sort of basics helps to delineate what lives where. ??
