How is _attachment_metadata() different from add_post_meta()?

Is wp_generate_attachment_metadata / update_ and get_ the same thing as post_meta (only for attachments)? If I want to assign some postmeta key/value pairs to an attachment, should I just use the add_post_meta() function? That’s what I was planning on using but then i saw the attachment_metadata functions in the code.
