How does WordPress make money?

  • I don’t see any ads and WP is free. Are the developers doing this just for fun or are there paid versions that I don’t know about?

  • Work on WordPress is mostly volunteer.

    The business side (wordpress.com) is handled through Automattic.

    Note on the volunteer side, issues of costs for WordPress’ hosting and whatnot has been supported through donations, though these days having the folk at Automattic (a.k.a. the original WP devs) handling most of the heavy lifting probably helps.
