How does trackback/pingback work?

I can’t seem to figure out how the trackback/pingback thingie works.
Say, I have a post regarding a certain issue, it’s located at: https://evenstarr.org/blog/?p=71
A friend of mine has a post regarding the exact same thing, located right here: https://hardstyler.net/blog/?p=24
How do I go about making a trackback which will show up beneath his post or in his comments? I have tried using both https://hardstyler.net/blog/?p=24 and https://hardstyler.net/blog/ in the trackback field when posting my entry and when editing it, but nothing happens. Same goes the other way around.
When I edit the post on my site, it already says that https://hardstyler.net/blog/?p=24 and https://hardstyler.net/blog/ has been pinged.
