How do you limit number of blog entries on index..

I did a search for this but couldn’t find anything, so apologies if I’m covering old ground (I would hazard a guess that I am).
Is there a way to limit the number of blog entries on the index page. I’d like to have about 5 entries, but currently I can’t see any way of doing this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
