How do you attach an image to a post?

Have looked around everywhere, quoating an article I read:
When displaying your images via the [gallery] shortcode, WordPress will display image-links for each image in the gallery.
What gallery shortcode?

Its a great article, but I don’t understand anything how I can show an thumbnail when a post is presented… anyone please help!
