How do trackbacks work?

  • Hi. I have something stupid going on with my blog, and I’m not sure why.

    I posted a review of a site a couple days ago, and then today I did a new post about something entirely different. The second that I posted todays post, I got an e-mail telling me that I had a comment on the post from a couple days ago. When I checked the comment…it was a paragraph from the post that I had just posted.

    Could someone tell me what trackbacks are in the first place (read the “official” description, still don’t understand. lol) and why it’s tracking back to something I just posted? Thanks in advance for any help!

  • What you received is a pingback not a trackback.

    Trackbacks can only be sent from your blog if you manually enter a trackback URL to track. They are entered on your write post page as “Send trackbacks to:” then the box for the URL.

    A pingback can be disabled via your “options” > “discussions” page. It’s the top line that reads, “Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.)”

    My advice is disable it. Every link you include in an entry will be “pinged” if the function is enabled, even your own previous posts.
    Plus it slows down posting if the posts contain links to sites that have no pingback function, online news sites, other blogging software, etc, etc.
