I took over updating our website and I am new to working in the back-end of WordPress. Our site is currently on WordPress 4.5.17 and I want to update it to the latest version. However I get the message below when I go the update page.

“You cannot update because WordPress 5.2.2 requires PHP version 5.6.20 or higher. You are running version 5.6.17-pl0-gentoo.”

I’m not sure how to go about doing this and I’m not sure where our backup files are hosted (or if we even have a backup). Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using a commercial host or doing this on your own VPS? If the former, please contact your host regarding how to update PHP on their system.

That… is a good question. I will see if I can track down that information.

So I did some digging around and this is the information I was able to pull up.

    jQuery Version 1.12.4
    PHP Version: 5.6.17-pl0-gentoo
    MySQL Version: (None)
    Server Software: Apache

Not sure if this is helpful or not. I tried asking the person who originally created the site but I don’t think she really knows.

Hold on. I think I may have figured it out.

Alright I’ve figured out who’s hosting our site. I will reach out to them in regards to updating the PHP.
