• I run about 40 different websites that are built on WordPress. Since about 6 months ago WordPress has started turning on the setting ‘Automatically close comments on articles older than 28 days’. I DO NOT WANT COMMENTS TO BE CLOSED ON OLDER ARTICLES.

But WordPress keeps putting this setting on every now and then all by itself (I have never seen that WordPress changes settings by itself in this way before!). I keep shutting that setting off, and when I come back a week or two later, the setting is sometimes still off, but at other times it has been turned on again. It’s really annoying and has been happening like 10 times in the past 6 months! And I am the only one who has admin access, and this keeps happening on all my websites. I also can’t figure out why it happens at certain times. For example it could be when a certain plugin updates, but I haven’t been able to figure out any pattern. So instead I’ve just kept having to go and check and turn this setting off all the time, but it’s really annoying because people then sometimes can’t comment on my blog posts!

Can anyone please help me solve this?

That makes two of us. ??

WordPress itself doesn’t have the capability to change that setting non-manually, so it’s either a plugin/theme issue or something outside of WordPress is messing with your database. My money is on the former.

At this point, I’d normally suggest that you try the plugin dance (ie deactivate all plugins to see if this resolves the problem) but, across 40 sites, that seems a little unreasonable at this stage. Is the problem occupying on all 40 sites? Do you have the same theme and/or plugins on all sites?

    Thanks for your reply ??

I can’t really perform the plugin dance in any way that makes sense, because the setting only changes sometimes (like every other week or so) and I can’t keep a plugin off for that long to see that it doesn’t happen.

It happens on all websites, and usually on many at the same time, but never on all at the same time. So one day I will log in and for example 10 of the sites have changed the setting, but not the others. It’s un unclear pattern that confuses me.

All websites have different themes, so it seems likely to be a plugin issue in that case. Most of my plugins are used across all websites.

Any idea on how to solve it?

hamiton22, I’m right there with you. The “automatically close comments” keeps checking itself again randomly, after days or weeks. I’ve even tried changing the number of days to 1000 but that gets reset to 28 too!

I’m also in a situation where I can’t disable all plugins, because it isn’t a re-creatable problem, and I can’t leave everything off for days or weeks.

Perhaps we can narrow this down by comparing our plugins? Any we have in common could be a lead.

    Here’s what I have active:
    – Akismet Anti-Spam
    – Anti-Malware Security and Brute-Force Firewall
    – Exploit Scanner
    – Get Custom Field Values
    – Google XML Sitemaps
    – Magic-fields
    – Move Comments
    – Post-Plugin Library
    – Similar Posts
    – Twitter Tools
    – WP Super Cache

Same here. I’m having to check my dashboard daily to see if the “close comments” setting has switched itself back on to the default 28 days. Very frustrating. It started some time on the last year – I initially went several weeks wondering why there were no new comments on my website (I normally get a lot); eventually found the “close comments” setting had switched itself on. Switched it back on. Fine for a couple of weeks… then, same again. And again and again. I can’t tell if it coincides with anything. – perhaps WP updates? Switching off all plugins indefinitely isn’t an option.

barryemma, do you have any plugins in common with the ones I posted in my previous comment?

I am having the same problem. I keep switching off the ‘automatically close comments’ function but somehow it keeps activating itself. I have the askimet anti-spam and wp super cache plugins similar to snadra. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

I have the same aggravating problem. Using Anti-Spam by Webvitaly and Comet Cache Pro. Any insights on how to fix this would be appreciated! Anyone?

Same here. From snadra’s list, I’m using:
    – Akismet Anti-Spam

    Any solution, anyone?
