• Morning all.

I am getting loads of spam everyday related to bogus posts on my website. This morning I got over 60 email notifications of dodgy activity on my website. My website also has a ‘members only’ section and people have to register to join. The majority of registration requests are spam. How do I combat this?

I know I am on an old version of WordPress, but I have been told not to update as apparently, this will mess up my website. A ‘friend’did the website and by all accounts did a pretty poor job of the coding.

    HELP!!

  • I’m a little confused. Is the problem spam comments or spam registrations?

If the former, make sure you have Akismet installed and in use. You’ll still get the spam comments but Akismet should pick them up and you won’t have to deal with them anymore. If that’s not enough I’d recommend Cookies for Comments which has always helped me.

Now, spam registrations <sigh>. It’s a tough one to stop because these days, although spammers are registering, they’re doing it manually and it’s hard to prevent what looks like a genuine registration. However, there are plugins that can help, such as WangGuard, Sabre or Stop Spammers Spam Prevention.

I like the plugin wp zero spam. It blocks a lot of the automated spam.

It can be used in conjunction with Akismet.

Good recommendation ?? Will look at that one myself!
