• We are trying to update our very old WordPress site that uses many custom templates. I’m in my sidebar.home page and need to update the text of the sidebar, but I see a note at the bottom of the page that says “You need to make this file writable before you can save your changes. See the Codex for more information.”

I reviewed the Codex and understand that there are different permissions for different groups etc, but how do I make these changes? Howe do I make this file writeable without changing other pages and permission?

I’m very new at WordPress, and our site does not use many of the plug ins, so I appreciate any help you can provide!

    Thanks.

  • Depending a bit on which tool you use to gain file access (ftp), but ein general rightclicking a particular file would do the job..

Be aware of the default/minimum levels of files and folders

Sadly, I am so new to WordPress that I don’t know where to access the sidebar.home file. I log in through wp-admin to edit the site, and we are using version 3.4.1. My boss in unwilling to upgrade to 3.6.1 today because we are expecting a surge in traffic tomorrow for a particular activity, and we do not want to risk the upgrade breaking something on the site.

Can you point me to where I might be able to find the sidebar.home file? Is it in wp-admin?

    Which theme do you have?

    It’s a custom theme.

    That’s very difficult to answer.

Is it something that is typically accessed through wp-admin, or through wherever the web site is hosted?

When you say, “I’m in my sidebar.home page and need to update the text of the sidebars”, are you referring to text that appears on your website (not the dashboard)?

    Thread Starter mrajotte

    (@mrajotte)

Yes, the text that appears on the Web site.

When I go to Appearance > Editor and then under Templates int he right column find the sidebar-home.php file, I cna edit the html but below the edit box I see the “You need to make this file writable before you can save your changes. See the Codex for more information.” message.

That won’t be in the “wp-admin” folder (hopefully – we presume), look in your “wp-content” folder.

Ask your hosting providers to help you with both tracking down this file and changing its permissions.

I’ll call them. I don;t even know how to access the wp-content folder. I literally was given the log in to the wp-admin account yesterday and am muddling my way through the changes to our freakishly custom site with copy/pasting and help from Google.

    Thanks!
