how do i know what pluginn version works with WP version?

So I loaded the latest version on a few of our sites (3.9.1)… Nothing. Then used 4.0.2 and bam, it worked. So how do I manage the plugin versions with WP versions. Sites are not on the internet so it is not easy for me to upgrade WP and its not even an option with some sites.
