• Maybe a newbie question but, how do I know all available shortcodes that I can use in a page or post?

  • Hi janfry,

If you are asking what shortcodes are built in with WordPress they are:

    [audio]
    [caption]
    [embed]
    [gallery]

Because plugins and even themes can add their own shortcodes, you would need to check the documentation for your theme and/or plugins for any additional shortcodes that may be available for you to use.

    Hope this helps!

Umm.. thank you ChristiNi, actually I thought that the built-in shortcodes were far more, and that they’d deal with far more features, like for example listing all posts and so on.

Moreover, I thought that there was an established and popular plugin which would deal with the listing of all the shortcodes including the ones added by other plugins.

I usually do my searches myself, but this time I decided to ask here to see if there was a commonly preferred plugin for this.

So let’s see if someone else comes here and adds up something…
    Thanks anyway for your answer.

    Cheers

Have a read of this page that I found. It explains a pretty simple way of listing them.

Thanks catacaustic but I was actually hoping to find some official reference listing of the default ones which would work with any fresh installation..

I just randomly found about https://en.support.wordpress.com/archives-shortcode/ and https://en.support.wordpress.com/display-posts-shortcode/ while searching for something else…

Maybe there is some kind of general reference page for all of them, but I could not find it.. actually I’ve not searched thoroughly, but that’s why I asked here ?? Thought it’d be something someone could have on the tip of their tongue..! ??

WordPress.COM and www.remarpro.com are two very different sites and offerings.

I knew already, so what? WordPress is still WordPress.

There are a bunch of shortcodes that only work on WordPress.COM sites. Using the JetPack plugin will make some of those work on a self-hosted site. You can see them here:

    https://jetpack.me/

Show all features and then click on the Shortcodes one.

    WordPress is still WordPress.

Well, no. It’s not. WordPress.COM does run on the same base software as is available for download from www.remarpro.com but there’s a whole lot of customisation and extras available at .com that aren’t part of the .org system out of the box.

There’s never going to be an all-exhaustive list of shortcodes for one very big reason: Every plugin and theme can add their own custom shortcodes at any time. Yes, there are some built-in ones, but the link that I posted above will show you what your site can do and I still think that’s the best way of going about things.

    Nifty little plugin there!

    Many thanks.
