Most people’s responses are to “edit the sidebar”… what does that even mean? I just dont know whats left to do. It’s been 8 months and i cant get it to work. I need specific step-by-step instructions please!!!

  • In WordPress you edit your widgets by clicking on
    “Appearence” and then clicking “Widgets”

On the widgets page you should see a section with various “SIDEBARS”.

Every theme is a little different so I might have more or less sidebars then you. They may all have different labels and some may not say the word “Sidebar”… you may have that are labled “Footer”…

The point is all of those things are Sidebars. Just open each one and look to see what’s in them.

The blogroll widget is usally inside one of your sidebars and is labled “Links”.

All you have to do to get rid of it is drag it out of the side bar and drop it just about anywhere that isn’t a sidebar.

Let me know if you still have trouble.

well, unfortunately.. i think that’s the beginning of my problem. Because if i put something in sidebar 1, those things disappear. But when i take that back out, those reappear, leading me to believe it is a default setting with the sidebar templates. I dont want any sidebars. How do i use templates anyways? …Do i copy and paste them into something?… or edit them?… or can i delete them and update file? over the past year i have been dealing with this and i cant seem to fix it.

    thanks for your time,
    Eric

    Eric,

    It could be your theme.

I think you are probably correct in that your theme is defaulting to automatically loading those widgets by default. There may be a way to tell your theme to stop doing that, but I couldn’t say without knowing your theme.

Are you using the default theme that came with WordPress?
    What’s your site?

To update your theme you click on “Appearence” and then “Themes”.
Up top you’ll see a tab that reads “Install Themes”.

Once you are there you can ‘search’ for a new free theme. After you find one you like, you click ‘install’ and then after it installs, you should get an option to ‘activate’ your new theme.

Many themes include ‘default widgets’ which appear unless you add _anything_ to the sidebar. If you add any widgets at all, it ignores the pre-defined widgets and pays attention to your choices. However the existence of the sidebar itself is defined within the theme’s PHP files.

It is possible to easily remove the sidebar by editing those files, but that’s a slippery slope. If you change the files, your changes will get overwritten when you update the theme. For that reason you would want to modify a copy of the theme, giving it a totally new name or create a child theme. If that isn’t your cup of tea, ask the theme developer to hack out a sidebar-less version.
